Shingles can strike without warning — and when it does, it’s often painful, exhausting, and disruptive to daily life. At G.M. Graham Pharmacies, we often hear from patients who’ve had shingles or know someone who has.

Many ask us about the shingles vaccine UK rollout: Who qualifies? Is it free? And what should they expect? Here’s everything you need to know about the shingles vaccine in the UK — including costs, eligibility and possible side effects.

What Is Shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the same virus as chickenpox — the varicella-zoster virus. After chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in your body. For some, it stays inactive forever.

But in others, especially as we age, the virus can reactivate and cause shingles.

Shingles usually affects a single side of the body and can cause:

  • A painful rash
  • Blisters that scab over
  • Burning or tingling pain
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Fatigue and fever

The pain can be severe and last for weeks. In some cases, it leads to complications like post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). This is a type of nerve pain that can last months — or even years — after the rash disappears.

Why the Shingles Vaccine Matters

The shingles vaccine helps reduce your risk of developing shingles — or make symptoms milder if you do get it. It also lowers your chances of long-term nerve pain and other complications. Even if you’ve already had shingles, you may still benefit from the vaccine.

There are currently two shingles vaccines in use in the UK: Shingrix and Zostavax. Zostavax was used for many years but is being phased out. Shingrix is now the preferred vaccine for most patients.

Who Is Eligible for the Shingles Vaccine on the NHS?

The NHS offers the shingles vaccine to people aged:

  • 65 years
  • 70 to 79 years (if not already vaccinated)
  • 50 and over with a severely weakened immune system

The new phased rollout means those aged 60–64 will also be included gradually over the next few years.

You’ll usually get a letter or be invited by your GP when you become eligible. If you have a weakened immune system, you may be contacted earlier — depending on your medical history.

How Many Doses Are Needed?

This depends on which vaccine you receive:

  • Shingrix is given in two doses, 2 to 6 months apart
  • Zostavax, the older vaccine, was a single-dose jab

The NHS is now switching to Shingrix because it offers stronger and longer-lasting protection. If you’re immunocompromised, Shingrix is the only option currently offered.

How Much Does the Shingles Vaccine Cost Privately?

If you’re not yet eligible on the NHS, or you don’t want to wait, you can pay for the shingles vaccine privately. The cost varies depending on the provider and vaccine type.

Typical private costs in the UK:

  • Shingrix: £180–£220 per dose (2 doses required)
  • Zostavax: £150–£200 (single dose)

At G.M. Graham Pharmacies, we offer competitive pricing and honest advice tailored to your needs. We’ll also help you understand which vaccine suits your age and health history.

Are There Any Side Effects?

As with most vaccines, side effects are usually mild and short-lived. Common side effects include:

  • Soreness or redness at the injection site
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Fever or chills

These symptoms often pass within a couple of days. Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you’re immunocompromised, we’ll carefully assess your suitability and ensure you get the right protection safely.

Can You Still Get Shingles After the Vaccine?

Yes — but the risk is much lower, and symptoms are usually milder.

The vaccine doesn’t guarantee complete immunity, but it does significantly reduce your chances of complications like PHN. That’s why it’s still recommended even if you’ve had shingles before.

When Should You Avoid the Vaccine?

You may be advised to delay or avoid the vaccine if you:

  • Have a current shingles infection
  • Have a severe allergy to any vaccine component
  • Are feeling very unwell on the day of your appointment

We’ll discuss this with you during your consultation and suggest the best approach for your situation.
