If you’re planning a trip to parts of Asia, Africa or South America, typhoid protection should be on your checklist. Typhoid fever is a serious infection that spreads through contaminated food or water. It can cause high fever, weakness and stomach pain.
Luckily, the vaccine offers a reliable way to protect yourself before you travel. But how long does the typhoid vaccine last? At G.M. Graham Pharmacies, we help travellers understand when they need the vaccine — and when it’s time for a booster.
Here’s everything you need to know before you pack your bags.
What Is Typhoid Fever and How Is It Spread?
Typhoid fever is caused by a type of bacteria called Salmonella typhi. It spreads through food or water that’s been contaminated.
This is more likely in places where sanitation and clean water access are limited.
Symptoms can include:
- High temperature
- Headache
- Tummy pain
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling weak or tired
Left untreated, typhoid can become life-threatening. That’s why prevention is so important for anyone travelling to high-risk areas.

Who Needs the Typhoid Vaccine?
The vaccine is recommended if you’re visiting regions where typhoid is common — especially if you’ll be:
- Staying with local families
- Travelling to rural areas
- Backpacking or travelling for an extended period
- Working in settings with poor sanitation
Areas with the highest typhoid risk include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, parts of Africa, and Central and South America. Even short trips can carry some risk, depending on where and how you’re travelling.
How Long Does the Typhoid Vaccine Last?
This depends on which type of vaccine you receive. In the UK, there are two main types:
- Typhoid injection (Vi vaccine)
- Typhoid oral capsules (Ty21a vaccine)
The injection protects you for around 3 years. You’ll need a booster if you’re still at risk after that time. The oral capsules provide protection for about 5 years, but they’re not commonly used in the UK anymore.
At G.M. Graham Pharmacies, we typically offer the injectable version. It’s quick, effective, and widely recommended.
When Should You Get a Booster Dose?
If it’s been more than three years since your last injection, and you’re heading to a risk area, you’ll likely need a booster.
Boosters are especially important if:
- You’ve had typhoid protection in the past
- You’re returning to a high-risk region
- Your travel involves poor sanitation or longer stays
Our team will check your vaccine history and help you decide whether a booster is needed before your next trip.
Is the Typhoid Vaccine Available on the NHS?
Yes — the typhoid vaccine is one of the few travel vaccines offered for free on the NHS. You may be eligible if your GP surgery provides NHS travel vaccines and your destination puts you at risk. However, not all practices offer travel health services. Appointment slots can also be limited.
If your GP can’t provide the vaccine, we can help. At G.M. Graham Pharmacies, we offer quick, local access to travel vaccines — including typhoid.
How Effective Is the Typhoid Vaccine?
The vaccine doesn’t guarantee 100% protection, but it greatly reduces your risk of illness. That’s why it’s important to practise good hygiene when travelling, even if you’re vaccinated. This includes:
- Drinking bottled or boiled water
- Avoiding raw fruit and vegetables unless peeled
- Choosing freshly cooked, hot food
- Washing hands regularly with soap or sanitiser
Combining the vaccine with smart food and water habits gives you the best protection.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Side effects from the typhoid vaccine are usually mild and short-lasting.
You may experience:
- Soreness or redness at the injection site
- Mild fever
- Headache
- Tiredness or aches
These usually pass within 48 hours. Serious reactions are extremely rare. If you have concerns about allergies or medical conditions, let us know before your appointment. We’ll assess your suitability.
When to Book Your Typhoid Vaccine
Aim to get your vaccine at least 2 to 3 weeks before you travel. This gives your body time to build protection. If you’re travelling sooner, don’t worry — we can still help. Some protection is better than none.
We’ll also check if you need other travel vaccines, such as hepatitis A, cholera, or tetanus boosters.
